Description
No single play represents Coach Paul “Bear” Bryant’s defensive football philosophy better than the historic goal line stand against Penn State in the 1979 Sugar Bowl. With fourth and goal inside Alabama’s one-yard line, the Crimson Tide defense rose to the challenge of a “gut-check” — one of Coach Bryant’s favorite phrases. The Classical defensive effort preserved victory for Alabama, clinching its tenth national championship; the fifth under Coach Bryant.
Alabama Players pictured include: Mike Clements (#43); Barry Krauss (#77); Murray Legg (#19); E.J. Junior (#39); Curtis McGriff (#96); Don McNeal (#28); and Rich Wingo (#36).
